Hiding Tells
Do you ever obtain that itch? The itch to gamble, to head to the closest gambling establishment, to locate a great stakes casino game of Texas hold em, to sit at a Twenty-one table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I like to scratch it.
I also really like to watch people bet. No two poker faces seem equal. When I wager I like to feel I put on a poker face which is impassable. But I know I’ve specific mannerisms. For 1, the only time I smoke is when I play poker or Black-jack. And then I smoke. But I smoke whether or not I am winning or losing, no matter if I’ve a great hand or bad.
I once bet in the weekly poker game. The casino game was generally five card draw. There was a gentleman who wagered with us every single week who constantly wore a hat. When he was dealt a excellent hand, unconsciously, he would start touching and betting with his hat. Pointless to say, he by no means won.
The greatest poker player I ever saw was a guy who manufactured much more actions and gestures at a poker table than anybody I had ever met. He was impeccable in the way he dressed. Generally an expensive suit and tie, boots shined and nails manicured. He was fastidious in this manner. And he was constantly brushing his pants or holding his hands or stacking his chips in neat little piles.
I use to study him for hours. I’d attempt to see if I could spot his tell. Picking fuzz off his vest- did this imply he was bluffing? Arranging his chips in a short pile – did this mean he had a beneficial hand?
Several years later I ran into him in the bar in New York and we had a beverage. I asked him if he had been aware of all those actions he made or if they have been subconscious. He informed me that every individual thing he did at a poker table was deliberate. He said that everyone is always checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are trying to spot the the tell.
So his method was to provide them lots to feel about. His reasoning was if they were pondering about him selecting a piece of fuzz off his coat and what it meant they positive were not thinking about their cards.
His system was diversion. And it worked for him. By no means give up a method that works for you.
