Holdem Poker Legends
Stu Ungar is thought to be by many to the greatest No Limit Texas holdem Poker gambler ever.
The 3 time World Poker Champion was born in New York in ‘53 and started wagering poker before becomming a teenager.
The young bettor began betting gin and at the age of 10 had won his very first gin tournament, while on holiday with his parents. By the time he turned 14 the small poker genius had turned pro and dropped out of school.
In ‘54 Stu entered the history books by winning 10 grand in a gin tournament without losing a single hand, a record which still remains in New York these days.
The fast talking wiz kid has been likened, in poker terms, to athletic superstars like Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Stu had a genuine skill for playing poker but regardless of his achievements in Holdem poker, he preferred playing gin.
Stu once said that there might a few day be a much better NL Holdem gambler than him except he couldn’t see how anyone could ever be a much better gin gambler.
In ‘80 Stu was put on the global map as one of the very best Hold’em Poker players in the planet when he was crowned World Poker Champ for the very first time. Astonishingly it was the very first time he had played in the tournament.
The subsequent year he dismissed any suggestions that it had been a fluke, by effectively protecting his crown. And in ‘97 Stu set the record by succeeding his third World poker championship.
But this poker legend also fought with substance abuse and a year following winning his 3rd title Stu Ungar died in his hotel room. According to medical professionals, he had died from a heart attack which was triggered by his lifestyle.
Stu Ungar had began with nothing except his skill and natural talent for the game which made this poker wonderful a millionaire many times over.
