Omaha Hi/Low: Basic Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no low hand available, the high hand takes the complete pot.

Although it seems complex at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to get the fundamental subtleties of the game with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 provides an overwhelming collection of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with a few battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
