No-Limit Hold’em Poker- Who is Phil Ivey?
Phil Ivey has been labeled as the greatest poker competitor in the world by many of the top pros. Phil Ivey was born in Riverside, CA and moved to New Jersey before reaching the age of one. His grandfather introduced him to penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, Phil was addicted to poker and wished to pickup everything he possibly could about the game. He would tell his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. Phil didn’t allow the detrimental feedback from other people destroy his goal of becoming one of the strongest poker players on the planet.
He started playing intently after acquiring a fake ID by the name of Jerome. He sharpened his skills at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first few years for him were a learning experience and winning wasn’t a common outcome at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 World Series of Poker where he made two final tables and won his 1st World Series of Poker bracelet, in a two dollar, 500 Pot-Limit Omaha match. At the last table he defeated many of the better known professionals including "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and headed out west to Las Vegas. He continues to compete in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players in the world. Phil credits his achievements to discipline and an eternal passion for poker. Phil says that he is picking up skills every day and is quite abashed about his accomplishments. Phil knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and always aspires to improve.
Even though Phil has come first in some big tournaments, he favors winning money games on a regular basis.
